Q: Ira, I really enjoy your Q&As and blog. One question, though. Why did you say that Dwyane Wade doesn't step up to defensive challenges? Jay Treiser, Plantation, FL

A: Because he tends to pace himself, making his defensive reputation mostly on steals and blocked shots. When it comes to bodying up against a top-tier shooting guard, too often the concern is about potential foul trouble. To do the job, and also avoid foul trouble, he needs to become as deft with his footwork on defense as he is with his handle on offense.

A: First of all, that ship has sailed, with Ron now in Sacramento and Peja in Indiana. The Heat did make a bid with Antoine Walker, but the Pacers preferred Stojakovic's higher-percentage shooting and less burdensome contract. The bottom line is Sacramento gave up one of its two best players for Artest, something the Heat was unwilling to do.

A: Posey could do more, but instead is doing what the Heat needs, which is filling the 3-point role that Eddie Jones and Damon Jones handled last season. Defensively, Pat Riley insists that Posey grades out among his top defenders, but that is hard to believe considering the numerous blow-bys by opposing small forwards.

A: Don't be alarmed. Almost all of Wade's 3-point attempts are long-distance heaves before the buzzer at the ends of periods. That actually is something to be admired. Most players are so vain with their statistics that they wait for the horn, then make a phony effort with the shot, knowing the miss won't count against their stats. And it also is to Wade's credit that he doesn't settle for the 3-pointer as part of his offense and works closer to the basket. He is in the process of perfecting his mid-range jumper, which is the perfect complement to his game.

Q: How much of a concern is Jason Williams' knee tendinitis? I'm worried he'll be sitting on the bench come playoff time. Why not rest him as much as possible now (No practices, no garbage time, no back-to-back games)? Also, what happened to his defense? Eric Sleppian, Pleasanton, CA

A: Nothing has happened to Williams' defense, but nothing has happened on that end over his career. The kid makes an effort, but his stature works against him on the pick and roll. As for the tendinitis, Williams has not practiced in more than a month and his minutes are being monitored. It is what it is, with the team hoping it goes away as mysteriously as it appeared.

A: Sure, the Heat still has two more opportunities to send Dorell to the D-League. As for Simien, only an injury to Udonis Haslem, Antoine Walker, O'Neal or Alonzo Mourning -- or a few lopsided games -- will clear the path for minutes. As a Riley rookie, the ritual is to just sit and watch -- just ask Charlie Ward.

A: Such moves likely will come closer to the Feb. 23 trading deadline. And don't forget about Tim Thomas, who has been banished by the Bulls, but could be released around the trade deadline. Heck, Glenn Robinson is still out there.

A: That's what I wrote in my midseason review. I'm still not sold on Gary being a backup shooting guard, but I am totally sold on having him on the floor in the decisive stages of a playoff game, when he is unlikely to go Damon on the Heat.

A: Yes, I like it a lot. Just like I liked it when Phil Jackson used to leave O'Neal on the court with two fouls in the first quarter or three in the second. The regular season is a time to work on discipline, on avoiding foul trouble, or learning to deal with the consequences.

A: Udonis has been anonymously efficient. He continues to play well alongside O'Neal and rotates better defensively than any other starter. And no, he did not seem more dominant last season, because he never has been dominant. He is the type of complementary player who allows O'Neal and Wade to succeed, nothing more, nothing less.
